We don’t tolerate violence, threats of violence, intimidation, or possession of weapons in the workplace, by anyone: employees, clients, visitors, or family members of any of them.

What’s prohibited

  • Physical violence or attempted violence
  • Threats, direct or implied, in any form
  • Stalking or harassing behavior
  • Intentionally damaging property
  • Bringing a weapon into the office, other than as permitted by Utah law for lawful carry, which must be concealed and never displayed

If you feel unsafe right now

  1. Get to safety. Leave the room, leave the building, do whatever you need.
  2. Call 911 if there’s an immediate threat to anyone.
  3. Then tell Helen and the practice manager. Same day, no matter how small it seemed.
Your safety is more important than a session, a schedule, or being polite.

Threats from clients

Clients in distress sometimes say frightening things. Your clinical judgment about what’s a threat and what’s an expression of pain matters, and the Crisis and safety protocol covers the clinical response, including duty to warn. But a threat against you or a coworker is a workplace safety issue, not only a clinical one. Report it. The practice will help decide whether services continue, whether a safety plan is needed, and whether law enforcement should be involved.

Threats from outside

If someone outside the practice, including a client’s family member, an ex-partner, or a stranger, threatens you or the office, tell Helen and the practice manager immediately. The practice may involve building security or police, and may put a safety plan in place.

Domestic violence

If you’re experiencing domestic violence and it could reach the workplace, you can tell the practice manager or Helen in confidence. We’ll work with you on a safety plan, which might include changing your schedule, screening visitors, or other steps. We won’t require details you don’t want to share.

Documentation and follow-up

Every threat or violent incident is documented by the practice, and we’ll follow up with you afterward. If you need time off or support after an incident, ask.
